'Liebstattsonntag' is not only celebrated in the center of Gmunden and in the Salzkammergut region. The Grünberg cable car will be open on March 15, 2026. The first cable car runs up the Grünberg at 9 am and will then take you up the mountain in comfort every 15 minutes.

In 1641, the Bishop of Passau, who was responsible for Gmunden at the time, established a very special custom for the spa town on Lake Traunsee. He instructed the town priest to invite the town's poor to a communal meal on the fourth Sunday of Lent and to serve them himself.
This gave Mid-Lent Sunday its beautiful name. This custom has survived in a modified form to this day.
